A Foldable Finally Worth Taking Seriously?

The first time I used a Galaxy Fold, I was at a demo kiosk in Bengaluru back in 2019. The hinge squeaked. The crease was unmissable.

The display felt plasticky, and the software? A stretched version of Android that barely fit the new form factor.

I remember muttering, "Cool gimmick - but who would actually use this daily?"

Fast forward to 2025, and here I am writing this story on the Galaxy Z Fold 7, seated in a cramped taxi during Delhi’s monsoon drizzle, flipping between a Google Doc on the main screen and Telegram on the cover display - no lag, no awkward pauses, and for once, no fear of snapping the hinge.

Samsung didn’t just iterate. This time, it refined.

And yet, as polished as it is, the Fold 7 comes with a ₹10,000 price bump.

Does that premium deliver meaningful value? Or is it a safe repackaging of what was already working?

Before you hit “Add to Cart”, let’s unpack what the Z Fold 7 actually offers - from its redesigned shell to its understated, almost Apple-esque maturity.

Design: Slim, Polished, and Finally Pocket-Ready

You notice it the moment you pick it up - the Galaxy Z Fold 7 feels like it’s meant to be carried.

At just 217g, it sheds over 20 grams from its predecessor.

And at 4.3mm when unfolded, this is no longer the chunky slab that slipped out of shirt pockets.

The hinge - often a point of mechanical anxiety - has been reengineered with new materials and can reportedly survive over 500,000 folds.

That’s 5 years of opening and closing it 250 times a day.

In my week of testing, the hinge felt smooth but solid - no slack, no groaning.

That said, the rear camera bump is a bit aggressive. On a flat table, the device wobbles when tapped.

Small detail, but one that matters when you're editing documents or watching videos unfolded.

Display: Dual-Screen Refinement, Not Just Size

Samsung has retained the dual-display charm but made meaningful improvements.

Cover Display: Now at 6.5 inches, with 120Hz refresh and Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2 protection.

This no longer feels like a cramped second screen.

It’s usable - genuinely usable - for messaging, calls, and even YouTube browsing.

Main Display: Unfold the Z Fold 7 and you get a crisp 8-inch AMOLED canvas that peaks at 2600 nits.

There’s virtually no visible crease anymore - a massive leap from Fold 4 and even Fold 5.

Colours pop, text is legible even under harsh sunlight, and the 120Hz refresh keeps every animation buttery smooth.

Yes, the bezels could still be thinner. And multitasking still isn’t perfect (Instagram stubbornly refuses to scale properly), but Samsung’s software tweaks in One UI 8 improve split-screen handling.

Performance: Premium Horsepower Under the Hood

The new Snapdragon 8 Elite processor delivers, no surprises there.

Whether you’re switching between a dozen apps, rendering a quick LumaFusion edit, or gaming on Genshin Impact, the Z Fold 7 barely heats up - something earlier models struggled with.

Available in 12GB and 16GB RAM variants, with up to 1TB of storage, this device isn’t just a phone - it’s a productivity powerhouse.

In my testing, I ran:

Two browser windows side-by-side

Slack, Gmail, Spotify, and Maps simultaneously

Background downloads via 5G

And it didn’t skip a beat.

Android 16 and One UI 8: Subtle But Stable

Samsung pulled a rare move - launching a phone with Android 16 out of the box, beating even Google’s own Pixel 10 lineup to the punch.

That alone signals commitment.

One UI 8 doesn’t reinvent the wheel, but stability and polish are immediately noticeable.

Fewer crashes, smoother animations, and a new gesture system that feels intuitive.

The multitasking dock has better memory - apps retain their position even after hours in standby.

Seven years of promised OS upgrades give the Z Fold 7 a rare sense of longevity in the Android world.

Camera: The 200MP Sensor Steps Up

Samsung has borrowed from its Ultra playbook, bringing the massive 200MP sensor to a foldable for the first time. And it shows.

Daylight shots are sharp, balanced, and not oversaturated.

Low-light photos finally hold up - dynamic range has improved significantly.

Portraits are still hit-or-miss. The telephoto lens feels underused.

The 10MP front camera does fine for video calls, though it still lags behind what Google or Apple offer on their flagships. It's functional, not fantastic.

In short: The camera is finally no longer a foldable compromise.

Battery and Charging: Still Playing It Safe

The 4,400mAh battery is unchanged from the Z Fold 6. And so is the 25W wired charging.

That’s underwhelming, especially when Chinese rivals are hitting 80W or more.

In my daily use:

~6 hours screen-on time

Mix of social media, document editing, maps, and camera use

One full charge got me from 9am to 10:30pm - just barely

You’ll survive a workday, but power users may need a top-up.

And there’s still no sign of Silicon Carbon battery tech, which Samsung has teased but not delivered.

What’s Missing: No S Pen, Fewer Gimmicks

Perhaps the biggest surprise? No S Pen support.

Samsung is slowly backing away from its stylus integration in foldables, despite the Z Fold 7's format being ideal for note-taking and sketching.

Also missing:

No in-box charger (predictable, but still stingy)

No headphone jack (expected, but worth noting)

No expandable storage

What you get, however, is Galaxy AI v3.0, a hybrid of Samsung's on-device intelligence and Google’s Gemini-powered cloud features.

Translation, summarization, and transcription all work well — but they’re not yet killer features that sell the phone.

Verdict: A Foldable That’s Finally Mature, But Not Without Tradeoffs

The Galaxy Z Fold 7 is, in many ways, the first foldable I’d genuinely recommend without caveats.

It’s no longer a prototype. It’s not a showpiece. It’s a powerful, polished tool that works.

✅ The build is refined
  • The displays are stunning
  • The camera is finally competitive
  • The software is ahead of the curve

But:
  • The battery and charging are dated
  • No S Pen support is a missed opportunity
  • It still costs a premium - ₹10,000 more than last year’s model

If you’ve held off on foldables until now, the Z Fold 7 is the most convincing argument yet. For existing Fold 5 users? This may not be the leap you’re looking for.
