Galaxy Z Fold 9 and Fold 9 Ultra: The 60W Charging Upgrade We’ve Been Waiting For

Samsung is reportedly gearing up to bring 60W wired charging to the upcoming Galaxy Z Fold 9 and Fold 9 Ultra. Last year, the Galaxy Z Fold 8 finally moved from 25W up to 45W, which was a welcome relief.

However, the foldable smartphone market is getting fiercely competitive. Apple recently launched the first-generation iPhone Duo, which easily hits a 50% battery charge in just 20 minutes using a 60W adapter. Samsung already uses 60W charging in the Galaxy S26 Ultra, meaning the technology is fully developed and ready to be transplanted into their foldable lineup.
Author Michael’s Take: Seeing the Galaxy S26 Ultra hit 60W earlier this year proved Samsung has the thermal management figured out. Tracking the supply chain reports, the components for 60W power delivery are already showing up in early foldable manufacturing runs. Apple's entry into the foldable space is forcing Samsung's hand, and they absolutely have to match that 60W speed to stay competitive.

Understanding how 60W charging works is a lot like restoring your health in a video game. If your character is almost completely out of health, grabbing a massive medkit (the 60W charger) rapidly fills up your health bar in just a few seconds.
But as your health gets closer to 100%, the game slows down the healing so you don't overcharge. Fast chargers blast a ton of power into your phone when the battery is nearly empty, but they deliberately slow down as it gets full to protect the battery from overheating.

Michael’s Take: The burst of speed in the first 15 minutes is what really matters. Testing the 45W Fold 8 was good, but the 60W S26 Ultra is noticeably faster when you only have a few minutes to plug in before running out the door. The physics of foldable batteries split across two halves make heat dissipation tricky, but the engineering leaks suggest Samsung has a new internal cooling layout to safely handle the 60W load.

Recent certifications also hint that the upcoming Galaxy S27 Pro and Ultra will feature 60W charging next year, paving the way for the Z Fold 9 series to follow suit. While it is always wise to treat early rumors with caution, the hardware infrastructure already exists within Samsung's ecosystem.
Faster top-ups mean you can spend less time tethered to a wall and more time actually using your device.

Michael’s Take: I always look closely at the leaked CAD designs, and the Fold 9 chassis does not look drastically thicker than the Fold 8. That tells me Samsung is relying on this 60W charging speed to fix battery anxiety, rather than making the physical 5,000mAh battery cell any larger. It is a smart, calculated move to keep the device thin while delivering the high-end performance power users expect.
