Huawei HarmonyOS PC Launches to Rival Windows in China

Huawei HarmonyOS PC Launches to Rival Windows in China

Huawei HarmonyOS PC Launches to Rival Windows in China

Summary Box:

Huawei launches HarmonyOS PC OS to challenge Windows and macOS dominance.

The company hopes to grow its domestic market share after smartphone success.

PC version of HarmonyOS promises faster performance and AI features.

Huawei officially launched its HarmonyOS PC operating system on May 31, 2025, marking a major step in its efforts to compete with dominant Western platforms like Microsoft Windows and Apple’s macOS.

The announcement was shared through the Huawei Central news outlet, which covers company updates.

This new development follows the success of HarmonyOS in China’s smartphone market.

Huawei now aims to expand its self-developed operating system into the personal computing sector, where foreign software still holds a large share.

Huawei HarmonyOS PC Targets Local Users

HarmonyOS PC is designed for Huawei’s own laptops and potentially other compatible devices.

According to the company, this version of the OS includes new artificial intelligence features and a faster boot process, which are expected to offer better performance compared to macOS.

Huawei is positioning the operating system as a viable alternative for Chinese users.

The goal is to give local consumers more control and independence from Western software companies, especially amid rising concerns over digital sovereignty.

HarmonyOS Gains in Smartphone Market Set the Stage

While HarmonyOS has only recently entered the PC market, its growth in the mobile sector has been notable. In early 2023, HarmonyOS held just 8% of China’s smartphone market. Android led with 72%, and iOS followed with 20%.

By late 2024, Huawei’s efforts began to pay off. HarmonyOS NEXT, a newer version of the operating system, grew to 19% market share in China’s smartphone segment. This was two percentage points higher than iOS, according to StatCounter. Android still led with 64%.

This improvement in smartphone share gives Huawei hope that it can do something similar in the PC space.

Windows Still Dominates PC Operating Systems

StatCounter’s Q1 2025 report on global operating systems shows that Microsoft Windows holds 25.79% of the global OS market, second only to Android.

In China, Windows accounts for 80.18% of PC operating systems - far ahead of macOS and Linux.

Apple’s macOS only saw 1.21% usage in China’s PC market in the same quarter. Linux surprisingly had higher usage, likely due to import restrictions and pricing on Apple hardware.

Huawei believes that macOS is the easier initial target due to its lower adoption rate. HarmonyOS PC could surpass macOS if it provides a faster, smoother experience as claimed.

Aiming for Long-Term PC Market Growth

The launch of HarmonyOS PC is not expected to make Huawei the top PC OS provider overnight. However, it is a long-term strategy.

The company hopes that over time, more Chinese consumers and businesses will choose HarmonyOS PC over foreign-developed systems.

Huawei plans to strengthen the OS with regular updates, software support, and deeper integration with its ecosystem.

The company has not yet revealed global plans, keeping its current focus on domestic adoption.

According to experts Bennet Buhner, the success of HarmonyOS in PCs will depend on multiple factors. These include compatibility with common software, hardware optimization, and user adoption rates.

While breaking Windows' monopoly will be challenging, Huawei could build a strong local user base if the OS lives up to its promises.

Industry Viewpoints

Industry analysts suggest Huawei's move is a strategic response to trade limitations and rising geopolitical tensions.

China has also shown growing interest in supporting homegrown tech solutions. HarmonyOS PC aligns with national efforts to reduce reliance on foreign tech infrastructure.

If Huawei can gain a modest share of the PC market in the next few years, it may encourage more investment in Chinese-made operating systems and software tools.

Author’s Opinion: Michael B. Norris

The launch of HarmonyOS PC reflects more than just a product release - it’s a symbol of Huawei’s long-term ambition to build a fully self-reliant tech ecosystem in China.

As someone who has followed the operating system market closely, I find this a bold yet necessary step in a country eager to build digital sovereignty.

HarmonyOS PC will likely find early success among nationalist consumers, state-backed institutions, and Huawei loyalists.

But the real test lies in convincing everyday users that it offers equal or better value than Windows or macOS.

If Huawei maintains a focus on software support, smooth updates, and robust performance, it may finally carve out a lasting place in the global OS landscape.
